If you’ve watched a movie where someone’s necklace breaks and the pearls spill everywhere, we’re here to tell you that’s a movie trope, and your pearl necklaces should never be strung like that. However, breaks do happen! Pearls are strung on delicate silk strings, and a tiny knot is tied on each side of the pearl to keep these beautiful treasures of the sea from spilling everywhere. If your necklace were to break, you would lose one pearl at most.
At La Mine d'Or Jewellers , we use high-quality silk thread as it is the softest material and therefore best for your pearls. It is also significantly stronger than other stringing materials, such as cotton thread. Depending on the size of the pearls, the thread we use to string your pearls may vary in thickness.
Regardless of what your pearls are strung on, the string does weaken over time, especially if your pearls are in a daily or weekly accessory rotation. We recommend getting your pearls restrung at least once every 2-3 years if you wear them regularly; however, a visual inspection of your pearls may be a better indicator. Look for strings that are dirty or starting to get “fuzzy,” as that indicates a weakening string. Uneven gaps between pearls and knots is also a good indicator that your thread is growing weak and needs attention.
Pearls that have lost their shiny luster may also benefit from a restringing. These pearls have likely been exposed to creams, perfumes, and skin oils, which means the same materials have also impacted the thread and weakened it.
