About Baume & Mercier
Founded in 1830 in the heart of Swiss Jura, Baume & Mercier enjoys global recognition for its exceptional timepieces. From workshops in Swiss Jura to its Geneva headquarters, the brand offers finely crafted watches that balance artistic design with innovative watchmaking. The legacy of founders William Baume & Paul Mercier lives on, blending classicism with creativity, tradition with modernity, and elegance with character, evident in collections like Riviera, Clifton, Classima, Hampton, and Baume.
Creativity and avant-garde
In the early 1920s, William Baume and Paul Mercier founded Baume & Mercier in Geneva, quickly gaining recognition for their balanced special-shaped wristwatch models. Awarded the prestigious “Poinçon de Genève” quality hallmark in 1919, the brand set a standard. Through the Roaring Twenties and Art Deco era, Baume & Mercier left an indelible mark on watch design, embracing change and catering to women's desires. In the late 1940s, the Marquise model marked success, leading to a series of creative and modern ladies' watches, challenging the notion that women's watches were mere miniaturized versions of men's. The brand continued to innovate with stylish, urban watches that embodied an art of living with inimitable elegance.
In the 1950s and 60s, Baume & Mercier, symbolized by the Greek letter Phi in its logo, laid the foundation for the traditional round watch archetype. Launching various chronographs with features like moon phase or triple date displays, the brand achieved equilibrium in design. The 1970s witnessed creative breakthroughs with unique timepieces like Galaxie and Stardust, earning international awards. In 1973, Baume & Mercier introduced the Riviera, one of the earliest steel sports watches. Joining the Vendôme group, now Richemont, in 1988, the brand introduced flagship lines that defined its identity.
The Riviera 50th Anniversary
For its 50th anniversary in 2023, the Maison is proud to revisit its Riviera Baumatic model by launching the “Riviera 50th Anniversary Special Edition” – limited to 273 pieces – paying tribute to the style and history of the collection. This special edition features discreet yet exceptional elements such as the secret “1973” signature on the transparent blue sapphire dial, the Maison’s emblematic “Phi” logo on the counterweight of the seconds hand, and a blue ring in the case middle that adds even more sophistication to the piece.
