Pearl Restringing
Pearls are timeless treasures that require thoughtful care to preserve their beauty for generations. Traditionally, fine pearl necklaces are individually knotted, with a small knot placed between each pearl. This helps protect the pearls from rubbing against one another and minimizes the risk of losing multiple pearls should the strand break.
At La Mine d’Or, we use high quality silk thread for pearl restringing. Its softness makes it particularly well suited to the delicate surface of pearls, while providing the strength needed for regular wear. The thickness of the silk thread is carefully selected according to the size and style of the pearls.
When Should Pearls Be Restrung?
Even the finest silk thread naturally weakens over time, particularly when pearls are worn frequently. For regularly worn strands, we generally recommend considering restringing every two to three years, along with periodic inspection.
Your pearls may be ready for restringing if you notice:
• Fraying or a fuzzy appearance along the thread
• Discolouration or visible buildup on the string
• Uneven spacing between pearls and knots
• Stretching or loosening of the strand
• A noticeable change in the way the necklace sits when worn
Pearls are also naturally sensitive to perfumes, cosmetics, creams, and skin oils. These substances can gradually affect both the lustre of the pearls and the integrity of the silk thread.
If you are unsure whether your pearls require attention, bring them to La Mine d’Or for an assessment. Our team will carefully inspect your strand and recommend the appropriate care to help preserve its beauty, security, and elegance for years to come.
