2021 - YEAR OF THE OX

Our fellow citizens of Chinese ancestry will be celebrating the New Year, according to the lunisolar calendar, on February 12th, 2021. It is also known as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival. The Chinese New Year dates back thousands of years. Originally the festivities were centered around the agrarian society of old times, hoping for fair planting weather and bountiful harvests. Today, even with the Chinese adoption of the Gregorian calendar, the Spring Festival is the most significant of Chinese holidays with many old customs inherited from the long Chinese New Year history.

With 2020 behind us, we need to celebrate happier horizons. What better way than joining our Chinese friends to rejoice in a new year of prosperity and good health.

There’s nothing particularly sexy about an Ox but the symbolism behind the solid beast of burden represents diligence, persistence and honesty.

The same could be said for La Mine d’Or – diligence, persistence and honesty – the qualities we strive for. 2021 has brought a new location in Halifax we are extremely excited about. We wish to reach out to our Chinese brothers and sisters to make this important event even more memorable.

During the 15-day celebration, gifts of money are given to children and grandchildren in a Red envelope. Why red? In Chinese culture, red represents luck and good fortune.
